Chris grew up in Ohio, long before it was known as a swing state, and while FM stereo and 8-tracks were still cutting-edge technology. In his formative years, Chris played bass in local bands throughout high school. During this time, he was exposed to professional recording studios and all their exotic gear: Analog tape machines, Tube amplifiers, and Record-cutting lathes. After college at Miami University and a degree in TV and Radio Production, Chris moved to California. To further sharpen his skills, he moved to Florida to attend Full Sail University. Chris ended up securing an internship at The LA Studios in 1990. Shortly thereafter he was hired on full time. After stints as floater engineer, 3rd engineer and 2nd engineer at both Margarita Mix and LA Studios, he was promoted to 1st engineer for the newly opened Zona Playa in 1996. Gaining broad experience in voiceover recording, spot mixing for radio and TV, mixing for television and ADR recording, he joined the mixers at LA Studios in 2001 where he continues to enjoy a diverse spectrum of work. Throughout his career, he has had the good fortune to work with many world-renown clients, many of whom worship him as some kind of audio god.
chris.cirino@lastudios.comCameron Davis, the retro engineer. He thinks he's living in the 50's, driving his old Buick, wearing cuffed jeans, attending concerts by rockabilly bands and cooking on his O'Keefe & Merritt stove. But in this modern world he's managed to master the computer, and for several years he edited and published his own magazine The Grindstone Magazine based on, what else, music and cars. He also owns started GrindTone Records, and with his permanently greased hair, here are rumors that he also owns stock in several pomade manufacturing companies. He has mixed for commercials ranging from Mercedes to M&M's, animated features such as Robots, Sponge Bob Square Pants, and Madagascar, and animated TV shows such as Kim Possible and Lilo & Stitch. Refusing to grow up, he plays kickball in his spare time.
cameron.davis@lastudios.comA rare So Cal native, Nathan grew up in south Orange County before it was known as "the OC" and started playing Bass at 13 to complete the family band... they already had drums and piano. He went on to study music at California State University, Long Beach, learning to play the Upright and performing in the Jazz Big Band and Symphony Orchestra. After graduation he composed music for TV and Radio commercials for nearly five years. Then, in 1999 he was awarded a Clio for Sound Design, and from there decided to transition into becoming a Mixer. He's been at Margarita Mix for nearly a decade recording VO, mixing for television, ADR recording for film and commercial mixing for TV and Radio, including spots for AT&T, Honda and Pepsi, just to name a few. Away from the studio you'll find him in his backyard with his wife and daughter, garden clippers in hand or at the SMC pool swimming laps. If he weren't a mixer, he'd be a chef.
nathan.dubin@lastudios.comDavid fell into audio like so many engineers do, starting as a local musician looking for a good day gig. Audio seemed the obvious choice, since he had been hooked on playing with his cassette four-track since he was a teenager. David went to study with the famous audio engineer Brian Ingoldsby. He soon found himself at the L.A. Studios doing pretty much every job under the roof. Over a decade later David had become an accomplished recording engineer and mixer, and was promoted to run Studio D in 2007. He hasn't forgotten his roots though, and remains active as an artist and producer.
nathan.dubin@lastudios.comMargarita Mix Chief Engineer Jim Hite studied marketing at the University of Illinois and played rock and roll guitar on weekends. Upon graduation, he moved to LA to pursue a music career as a session guitarist. Landing a summer job at Bell Sound Studios in Hollywood, Jim soon recognized that recording, rather than playing, was more to his taste, and committed to becoming the best engineer in the city. While at Bell Sound, he engineered sessions and won numerous IBA's and Clios. In 1977, Hite moved to Wally Heider Recording, the foremost remote recording facility in the country, to expand his interest in music mixing. In 1982, Hite met Jim Bredouw and Sunny Blueskyes, entrepreneurs who owned L.A. Studios. He joined the team, bringing his music and ad community clients with him. In addition to his ad work, Hite engineered the live radio program Rockline, originating from the LA Studios. When LA Studios expanded services in 1990 to include audio post with its flagship Hollywood facility, Margarita Mix, Jimmy took a critical leadership role in its design; a role he repeated at his current home, Margarita Mix de Santa Monica, which came online in 1999.
jimmy.hite@lastudios.comBorn in Minnesota, and growing up in Iowa, Michael received a BA in psychology from The University of Iowa '98. Soon after graduation and unsure of his future career, he explored his potential in Boston and Atlanta working office jobs until he realized his career path, audio. He received his certificate from the Recording Workshop in Chillicothe, Ohio in 2000, and moved to Los Angeles at the end of 2001. Michael actually got his start in post at MMSM as a runner, and after putting in his time, was promoted to assistant. Wanting to be a mixer, Michael left MMSM and took a job at Mike Recording, which eventually was bought by Bennett Productions. It was there where he became immersed in mixing long format TV shows, but also traveling the world as a production audio recordist. “The ability to be there at the beginning and at the end of projects increased audio fidelity greatly for both me and my clients.” Michael has rejoined Margarita Mix Santa Monica as a mixer, sound designer and remote recording expert and is living proof of achieving his career goals through passion for the craft and relentless optimism.
michael.jesmer@lastudios.comOriginally from New York, Jeff grew up going to recording sessions with his father, a Commercial Producer who worked on many spots including Coke, Wilkinson Blades and Palmolive. Jeff attributes his father as the one that kindled his love of studios and the excitement of the process. In High School, he started recording his friend's bands and doing live sound. He attended Institute of Audio Research in Manhattan and got his first job recording at Howard Schwartz until he decided that in the great tradition of Jed Clampet “Cliforny is the place for me” and loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly, hills that is. He interviewed with Jim Bredouw and Sunny Blueskyes of the LA Studios. Two weeks later, he began mixing for them at night. When the time came to open Margarita Mix Hollywood, he went there and was given a room a year later. Margarita Mix Santa Monica was opened 10 years after that and he have been here ever since. He's been part of the team for 21 fun and exciting years in total, having won multiple awards for mixing and sound design, and still enjoy every days' challenges and the chance to create sounds for clients and to work for and with the people he loves.
jeff.levy@lastudios.comRobert came to Margarita Mix almost 10 years ago. Right out of High School, he was accepted into film program for inner city youth called Inner City Filmmakers. He was the only student who was interested in sound, where as everyone else wanted to be directors, writers or editors. He interned for eight months before getting hired full time to work in the machine room at Margarita Mix. Currently, he gets to work with a lot of fun people recording sessions while also supervising the machine room guys. When Robert's not at work or out with the Wife, he's volunteering for the Los Angeles Fire Department's -- Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). larry.winer@lastudios.comHunter Curra is a born and bred Texan (even though he mistakenly lost his accent somewhere along the way). He started tinkering with digital audio and music as soon as he could reach the keyboard. While in art school, when he wasn't playing in bands, or hosting recreations of John Cage works, he was getting bugged by the animation/film department-apparently sound is important! Eventually giving in and falling in love with the emotional effect of marrying sound and image, he went on to work on (Student) Emmy award-winning projects. Starting 2006 he brought along this breadth and skill to Margarita Mix Hollywood where he now heads the Sound Effects Editing department. He enjoys working with show creators to help complete their vision, and guide their projects to the next level with sound. Such seasons as Adult Swim's Emmy Winning Robot Chicken, Moral Orel, Mary Shelly's Frankenhole, & Titan Maximum, Fox's Allen Gregory & Bob's Burgers, Disney XD's Motor City, MTV's Rediculousness, dozens of pilots, a couple features, and DVD extra material have been completed since his start. More to come!
